More Downsizing For Darren Hayes

Less than two weeks after it was suggested that he was struck-off their high priority artist list in the US, former Savage Garden singer Darren Hayes has now had his website downgraded by Columbia/Sony records.

“After almost three years… Sony are unable to keep me on any longer due to cutbacks within the company” said the moderator who’s maintained the increasingly ailing message board for Savage Garden and Darren Hayes since 1999.

The bad news comes hardly two weeks after Columbia Records’ decision to remove Darren off their US high priority list, which includes Celine Dion, Ricky Martin and Jennifer Lopez. This is the result of the failure of his solo single, ‘Insatiable’ and the subsequent album, ‘Spin’.

It still isn’t clear how www.darrenhayes.com is to be run in the future but some sort of information service will be maintained, apparently.

Darren Hayes will release his second UK single from ‘Spin’, which is entitled ‘Strange Relationship’, out 8th of July.

Michael Jackson Angry At The Poor Treatment Of Black Artists By Music Industry

In an appearance with New York civil rights leader, Reverend Al Sharpton, the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, 43, has lashed out at the music industry’s treatment of black artists, himself included.

“The record companies really do conspire against the artists. Especially the black artists” said the singer to an adoring crowd of around 350 people on Saturday inside Sharpton’s National Action Network headquarters in Harlem.

The former boy wonder of the Jackson Five said generations of black musicians have been hurt and manipulated by profit-grabbing record companies, and called attention to his own dispute with label Sony Music.

“When you fight for me, you’re fighting for all black people, dead and alive” Michael said.Michael has called on Sony to release music recorded in a charity effort that followed the September 11 attacks. There have also been charges that Sony Music, owned by Japanese media and electronics giant Sony Corp, failed to properly promote his latest album, ‘Invincible’ which has had disappointing sales.

The dispute has won sympathy from Al Sharpton and lawyer Johnnie Cochran, who have started an initiative against what the two say is the mistreatment of artists of all races and colours by record companies.

The man, who made the “moonwalk” look so cool back then, also targeted Sony Music Entertainment chief, also known as Mariah’s ex-husband, Tommy Mottola, calling him a racist and “devilish”. He accused Tommy of using the “n-word”, which is a highly derogatory racial slur.

“We feel that they are sabotaging the album” said fan Chantal Obrist, who flew down to New York from Switzerland to join the protest.

So what have the Sony people have to say about all this? A Sony spokesman said later on that Michael’s comments were “ludicrous, spiteful and hurtful”. The spokesman said “It seems particularly bizarre that he has chosen to launch an unwarranted and ugly attack on an executive who has championed his career, and the careers of so many other superstars, for many years”.

Charges that record companies have exploited minority artists are neither new nor limited to the King of Pop. Many have argued that African-American musicians have been withheld the riches generated by their creativity and performances for more than a century.

The industry has protected itself by emphasizing the financial risks taken on by record labels when they sign new artists, many of whom fail to make money.

Mousse T’s On Fire

Taking a break from his multiple remixing and writing duties is Germany’s Mustafa Gündoğdu, better known to you and I as Mousse T who promises that one will be hearing a feast of funky sounds and beats with the release of his debut album, entitled ‘Gourmet De Funk’. It’s scheduled to be out in all good record stores come 12th August.

In case you’re having trouble placing the name Mousse T to a hit, let me help you out. He is, of course the man who made ‘Horny’ such a huge hit. And then there’s also the Tom Jones hit, ‘Sex Bomb’. Both of these hits will be found in the album.

His awesome new single ‘Fire’ featuring vocals from Emma Lanford is out on the 22th of July. The album promises much with Mousse T picking up Ivor Novello awards for writing and Grammy nominations for remixing previously. He’s also set-up his own label Peppermint Jam.

‘Gourmet De Funk’ will feature Emma Lanford of course, Tom Jones obviously and Roland Gift amongst others so go grab that copy of yours.

Check the video and other tracks from his new album out at his official site, located at http://www.mousset.de/.

Norah Jones Finds Britney’s Dance Moves Pretty Stimulating, Plus More

Norah Jones isn’t your typical jazz kind of chanteuse. Without the slightest efforts, she’s captured listeners way outside jazz. How incredible is that, really?

If you haven’t picked yourself up a Norah Jones disc, then you really don’t know what you’re missing. Trust me, you don’t have to be a big fan of music like hers to enjoy what she has to offer. Thousands of critics and positive reviews can’t be wrong. This is what VH1 had to say of Norah’s abilites. “Sensual, carefree, forlorn and yet cool, it simply wafts down from the speakers and settles on the couch next to you, like some friend who showed up out of nowhere. She’s that good.”

With that said, it should not come as a surprise to anyone at all that her album ‘Come Away With Me’ is riding high on the official UK album charts. It’s still in the Top 10 regions.

In response to the question “Some journalists have said that the disc’s singularity comes from the fact that it has the audacity to be low key in a splashy pop era. What are your views?”, Norah replied “It’s kind of like sensory overload. I can’t sing like that. Some girls can sing that well. A lot of pop people out there are way cool, but they overdo it.”

So with incredible vocals of hers, what kind of music does Norah listen to and does she secretly own a Britney Spears album, perhaps?

To this, the Miss-India beautiful Miss Jones replied “Well, I’m a fan of Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder. As for the Britney LP, no I don’t own that kind of stuff. But I do like to watch it on TV if it comes on. It’s definitely stimulating, don’t you think? Britney’s dance moves are very interesting.”

Feel It With Beenie Man, Janet Jackson And The Neptunes

In an all-star winning collaboration featuring multi-platinum superstar, Janet Jackson and uber cool producers The Neptunes, Beenie Man is set to explode worldwide with his highly anticipated new single ‘Feel It Boy’.

Critics are hailing it as yet another possible summer anthem of 2002 as it’s such an unforgettable record.

Beenie Man, Jamaica’s top selling deejay, helped co-write ‘Feel It Boy’ with extraordinary hitmakers, The Neptunes. And to top it all off, The Neptunes’ production features Janet Jackson’s signature sounds over their trademark riffs.

Soon, be sure to catch a Dave Meyers directed video, filmed on the beautiful beaches of Southern California. It’ll of course feature onscreen performances by Beenie Man and Janet Jackson so that should be pretty interesting.

‘Feel It Boy’, the first single from Beenie Man’s forthcoming release ‘Tropical Storm’. It seems that the single has already made it into playlists of popular radio stations worldwide on the 3rd of July so chances are you’ve already heard the track. But in case you haven’t then you can always mouse-click yourself to his official website http://www.beenieman.net/ and you’ll be able to hear a special edit of that single.

‘Tropical Storm’ will have an assorted who’s who of special guests that’ll be featured, like Lil Kim, Sean Paul, Lady Saw, So Solid Crew and more. The LP will have sounds like electronica, R&B, rock and hip-hop beats.

‘Tropical Storm’ is the follow up to Beenie’s first release, the highly acclaimed 1999 ‘Art and Life’ that eventually went on to achieve a gold status in the States and even garnered itself a two-time Grammy nomination. So with this upcoming release, it’s sure to break even higher grounds in the US and possibly other nations as well.

Halfway Down The Sky For Splender

Splender is going to release ‘To Whom It May Concern’ come 20th of August.

Splender is, of course, the band that gave us all hits like ‘Yeah, Whatever’ and ‘I Think God Can Explain’, taken off their debut album ‘Halfway Down The Sky’.

‘Halfway Down The Sky’ was backed by Columbia Records but apparently when the A&R person left, so did Splender. So now, their upcoming release in August will be released through the good people at J Records.

The first single from ‘To Whom It May Concern’ is ‘Save It For Later’ and it’s played in radio outlets in US right this instance.

Hear the single and more at their official site, conveniently located at http://www.splender.com/.

Kylie Minogue Does Indeed Have Cellulite

Pop vocalistress Kylie Minogue has revealed that she does actually have cellulite. The claims will get a thumbs up from women around the world but her male fans will greet the news with shock.

The Australian’s flimsy outfits have helped her soar back to the top of the charts. Her glittering hot pants have become legendary among tabloid newspapers. With all those sexy duds that she wears, people have long wondered whether or not she does possess cellulite. Mel B, in a previous Pop-Music.com article, went on to say that Kylie did do plastic surgery.

Kylie admits most photographs of her are so airbrushed that they bare scant resemblance to the real Kylie.

“Cellulite is there already. It’s only faint, but if I squeeze my thighs I can see it. I just make sure my lights are in the right place,” the 34 year old said.

The elfin star, who rejects Mel B’s accusations on the whole she having cosmetic surgery, went on to say that she is open to the idea of plastic surgery or so-called soft surgery such as Botox injections.

“I’m not averse to it. If someone feels they have to live up to a certain image then I can kind of understand that pressure. I’m considered to be one of those images and I know how unreal they are” she told Marie Claire magazine.

Other glamour icons such as Jerry Hall and Naomi Hall have been pictured with the dreaded dimpled skin around their thighs. But few are as willing as Kylie to admit that many of their official photographs are airbrushed.

Well done Kylie.

All Eyez On Monica

R&B singer and possibly Brandy’s rival (it’s what I think), Monica, has just finished wrapping up work on her upcoming third LP set. Apparently, after agonizing over coming up with a proper name for her new album, she’s decided on just calling it ‘Monica’.

In a statement released on the 27th of June, she describes her new material as a “coming of age” offering that she co-wrote, saying “I’ve never had a self-titled album before and since I co-wrote the entire thing, what better timing for one?”.

The new album, due out in shops come 20th of August, is backed by the people of J Records. They’re the people who gave us Alicia Keys, Angie Stone, Busta Rhymes and more.

The first single from the album, ‘All Eyez on Me’, which features part of Michael Jackson’s ‘Pretty Young Thing’, is already playing at R&B radio stations. Other songs on the album are ‘Ain’t Gonna Cry No More’, ‘Breaks My Heart’, ‘Down 4 Whateva’, ‘Searchin”, ‘U Should’ve Known’, ‘I Wrote This Song’, ‘If U Were the Girl’ and more.

‘Monica’ follows 1998’s ‘The Boy is Mine’, featuring the No. 1 hit duet with Brandy on the title track, and 1995’s ‘Miss Thang’.

Music fans who still in outdoorsy kind of mood after this year’s Glastonbury will be pleased to hear that Spiritualized are to play this year’s Witnness Festival in Ireland.

Jason Pierce and crew will play the Dance Stage at The Fairyhouse Racecourse, just outside Dublin on the 13th of July.

Other acts recently who have recently been added to the line-up over the weekend of 13th and 14th of July include Telepopmusik and The Redneck Manifesto. Oasis, Foo Fighters, The Prodigy, Green Day and a whole host of other big name bands will also do their thang at the event.

Westlife Spends Million Pounds To Be Thin And Posh

You’ve probably already heard this but in case you haven’t, Westlife have decided that they need to pay out GBP1 million in order to revamp their image so that they can crack the American market. You know what’s interesting, Westlife did swear that they would never return to the US again after they failed to make an impression last year. Wonder what inspired them to give it another shot?

Anyway, as previously reported on Pop-Music.com a while back, we all know that they’ve been putting on weight and in order to win the hearts of the Americans, they’ve got to be thin so I reckon part of that GBP1 million goes to the slimming pills and diets and what not.

They’re also having posh makeovers as well so a chunk of that million pounds would go there. Apparently, their looks and image have to undergo a massive change so as to appeal to the music fans Stateside, complete with new hairstyles and designer duds.

So what happens to the rest of the money? See, they have to make high-class music videos as well so they’ve hired video maestro, AttiI J, to reshoot their ‘World Of Our Own’ video.

A source told The Daily Star “Westlife know how much effort needs to be taken into cracking America and they’re psyched up for it.”

Their new American manager Robert Livingston is confident that they will be a hit in America and has booked them to appear on top rated US chat shows like ‘The Late Show With David Letterman’, my favourite ‘The Tonight Show With Jay Leno’ and ‘Entertainment Tonight.’

Think they’ll make it? I’ve my doubts.
